Perhaps one helpful step would be if we could define "statesman" as something other than, "What every politician imagines themself to be."

You’re right, that line is way too old to do the job. I’ll switch it mid-campaign for this one:

“A statesman is a politician who’s been dead 10 or 15 years.” -- Harry S Truman

(The S didn’t stand for anything)
