Riposte Card No. 1: Chesterton by Hare

I’m delighted to share that our first Riposte Card — a limited edition, beautifully illustrated 4 x 6 artwork sent by mail to paying subscribers  — is designed by Antony Hare, an effervescently accomplished multimedia artist in London, Ontario. Antony’s the spiritual grandson of the great caricaturist Al Hirschfeld and his work has appeared in all the best places.

We decided to kick things off with a favourite line of mine from G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936), a 300-pound caped columnist who produced many forests worth of copy throughout his life. Chesterton’s best lines are those where the message is as light as the medium.

“I believe in getting into hot water. I think it keeps you clean.”

“It is the most sincere compliment to an author to misquote him. It means that his work has become a part of our mind and not merely of our library.”

“A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it.”

“Poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese.”

And the winner:

“An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.”

To get this beautiful artwork and many more, smash that button like it’s an inconvenient adventure!
