I’m delighted to share that our first Riposte Card — a limited edition, beautifully illustrated 4 x 6 artwork sent by mail to paying subscribers — is designed by Antony Hare, an effervescently accomplished multimedia artist in London, Ontario. Antony’s the spiritual grandson of the great caricaturist Al Hirschfeld and his work has appeared in all the best places.
Together, Antony and I narrowed it down to one of my favourite lines by G.K. Chesterton, one that always comes in handy during life’s less amusing moments:
“An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.”
As a gifted portraitist, Antony began with the man himself.
We wanted to capture the duality of the line, so we tried a dark n’ light setup:
But we wanted more of Antony’s excellent penmanship:
How to decide? By picking the flavour that the indecisive always go with at the ice cream parlour: Neapolitan.

What's your go-to item in a well-stocked stationery store?
Pens. Any and all kinds.
Where do you go for inspiration and/or information?
I'm inspired by all manner of buildings, film, and objects like toys, tools, and instruments.
Is there one joke, witticism, or aphorism you live by?
There are so many. Changes all the time. Lately I’ve been living by: Keep your side of the street clean which is therapy-talk for focusing on one’s own problems and never-minding one’s neighbour’s.But the one I ultimately live by is Socrates’ laconic reveal of human limitation: The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.
What's the best thing to put on toast?
Salted butter.
What work are you most proud of, and how can people support it?
I'm genuinely proudest of my body of work which has a range and trajectory I did not predict or expect. Let alone that I have a body of work at all.Engaging with my Instagram—which best represents the scope of my work—is the most effective, practical means of support.
